How to spend 24 hours in Oxford

By Kat Botchway

Oxford City is the perfect blend of charismatic, charming and picturesque. It is just small enough to be able to walk around on foot, whilst being large enough that there is plenty to do. Although you could certainly spend a week in Oxford without getting bored, but follow this whistle-stop tour to make the most of a tight schedule!

Morning

Start the day off in the scenic district of Jericho. This is a popular spot for locals looking for buzzing cafes, stylish restaurants and chic bars- if you have more time, it’s definitely worth a visit in the evening too. After a freshly brewed coffee and buttery pastry, head towards Oxford’s museums. Oxford has three free museums which feature everything from dinosaur bones to classical art to shrunken heads! You have the option of visiting The Natural History Museum, The Pitt Rivers (a unique collection of artifacts to do with people and culture) or the Ashmolean (a museum of art and archaeology). You could even visit all three if you’re incredibly efficient!

Lunchtime

For lunch, it’s time to head towards the river. Oxford has a plethora of cosy yet charming pubs selling delicious food perfect for a lunchtime pick-me-up. The Head of the River is, as the name suggests, situated right on the banks of the river with stunning views of Christ Church College’s gardens. This has a large beer garden for sunny days, and a large cosy interior during the winter. It’s sensibly priced for a lunch-time meal too. If you’re looking for something a little different, head to The Punter, also situated on the banks of the river. This pub has a fully vegetarian menu that will still satisfy any desires for a hearty pub lunch!

Afternoon

After lunch, take a leisurely stroll through the historic colleges. Start with a visit to the iconic Christ Church College, famous for its stunning architecture and even features as the great hall in the Harry Potter movies! Don’t miss the breathtaking Tom Quad and the impressive Christ Church Cathedral.

Next, make your way to Radcliffe Square, home to the famous Radcliffe Camera which may be recognisable from being recently featured in two contrasting films: Saltburn and Wonka! The Radcliffe Camera is next to the Bodleian Library, one of the oldest and most renowned libraries in the world. It’s worth taking a guided tour to understand the rich history and fascinating secrets this library holds.

Evening

When it comes to dining in Oxford City centre, there are plenty of enticing options beyond traditional pub fare. For a taste of French cuisine in a charming setting, look no further than Pierre Victoire. Tucked away on Little Clarendon Street, this hidden gem offers an intimate and cozy dining experience featuring a delectable variety of French classics. For an authentic Italian experience, make your way to Al-Andalus Tapas Bar. While primarily known for their Spanish cuisine, they also serve a range of delicious Italian dishes. From classic pasta dishes to wood-fired pizzas, Al-Andalus offers a unique fusion that will satisfy your cravings. If you’re in the mood for Thai cuisine, Giggling Squid is a fantastic choice: a stylish restaurant which offers a contemporary twist on traditional Thai dishes.

After dinner, head to one of Oxford’s many traditional pubs for a pint of local ale and a lively atmosphere. The Eagle and Child, famous for being a favourite meeting place of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, is a must-visit for book lovers and history enthusiasts.

End the night with a leisurely walk along the river, taking in the magical sights of Oxford’s colleges at night. The beautifully lit bridges and stunning architecture create a truly enchanting atmosphere.

And there you have it, a perfect day in Oxford packed with history, culture, and charm. Whether you’re a history buff, a literature lover, or just appreciate beautiful surroundings, Oxford has something for everyone. So, grab your walking shoes and get ready to explore this charming city!
